Journey into the past and discover your family’s history

How It Works

Taking the First Step

Initial Consultation – FREE

All research starts with what we already know. Ideally, you should have solid information about at least one ancestor who was born before 1920 as a starting point. Before our session, I will ask you to take pictures of or scan any documents, newspaper clippings, relevant letters etc. about your family and email them to me. Then we meet via Zoom and talk about what you know about your ancestors, and what you would like to find out. Availability and accessibility of records varies very widely depending on location and time period and there are never any guarantees that we will find what you are looking for. But once I know when and where I will be looking, we can usually come up with a realistic research plan.

Journey Into the Past

My research services are available in 5 hour blocks for $375.

I suggest that we start with one block of focused research.

Working from the information and documents you have provided, typically focusing on one surname in one country, I begin the hunt for records that will answer your research question. As I go along, I log every step taken and what information it did or did not yield. I analyze the evidence and use it to extend your family tree, adding as many additional generations as can be accomplished in the time frame. I identify next steps and promising lines for further research. All findings will be included in the research report that you will receive. After that, you can decide if you want to continue and which additional research questions you would like to find answers to. As we find more information, new questions will inevitably arise. We can tackle them at the pace that suits you.

What You Can Expect

  • Tailored Research Plans: A review of existing family knowledge and your research questions will be the basis of a customized research plan.

  • Personalized Reports: In-depth reports that tell your family's story in a compelling narrative. Whenever available, copies of documents and images will be included.

  • Historical Context: Insights into the historical events that shaped your ancestors' lives.

  • Your Family on Wikitree: The place "where genealogists collaborate" and tens of thousands of genealogists, both amateur and professional, are working together to grow a single world family tree. Your family can be part of that tree!

  • Connection to Distant Relatives: Contact information for persons I come across during my research that share your ancestry.

  • Interactive Sessions: One-on-one sessions to discuss findings and answer questions.

  • Emotional Support: If needed, EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) “Tapping” to process difficult findings and heal intergenerational trauma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I hire a genealogist? Can't I just do it myself?

Yes. BUT - hiring a professional like myself will deliver much greater results far more quickly, and, because I know how to analyze the data, the information I gather for you is certain to be accurate. Let me help you tell your family's story.

What is the difference between genealogy and family history?

Genealogy is simply the study of lines of descent from one generation to the next. Family history is much broader, including the study of how people actually lived and how they were connected to the world around them.

How long will it take?

How long it takes depends on how readily records are available to answer your research questions. That in turn depends on which time period we are looking at, which country or region and on many other variables like, which religion, if any, your ancestors belonged to or what their status in society was. During our consultation session we will develop a research plan based on what information you already have and what you want to find out. That will allow me to provide a realistic estimate for how much work will be involved. Since the consultation session is free to you, you can't really lose! And whether the project is big or small, I can promise you that I will gather as much information as possible for you in the time we agreed upon.

What kind of information do you need from me?

All research needs a starting point. I will need any information about your ancestors that you already have, such as names of your (great)grandparents, when and where they were born, married, died, where they lived, perhaps what their job or profession was. Religious affiliation, special interests or hobbies can provide additional clues, as can family stories.

How will I receive the results?

You will receive a written history of your family, illustrated with any relevant photographs I can find. All sources will be meticulously documented and I will append copies of any relevant documents as well as research notes to inform future research. Unless you advise me not to, I will also enter the results into Wikitree. I will send all this to you electronically. Then we meet via Zoom to discuss the results.

What is Wikitree?

My favourite place to make family history that I work on public. Not only is it free, it is, as the tagline says, the place "where genealogists collaborate." Tens of thousands of genealogists, both amateur and professional, are working together to grow a single world family tree. Even more importantly, great efforts are being made to continually improve the accuracy of the information through researching and adding primary sources and incorporating the results of DNA tests. As of now, Wikitree has more than a million registered members and almost 40 million profiles, more than 13 million of which have DNA test connections. I myself have made over 3200 contributions to date, many as part of the Gilbert One-Name Study and the Germany Project. I am certified to work on pre-1700 and pre-1500 profiles.
